Disc Herniation
A herniated disc – also referred to as a ruptured disc – occurs when the firm outer exterior of a spinal disc develops a crack, allowing some of the softer interior to leak out and irritate adjacent nerves.
Depending on the location of the nerves affected by the herniation, symptoms associated with a herniated disc can include lower back pain that radiates downward to the legs and feet, or when in your neck pain may move toward to the shoulders and hands.
In most cases, a herniated disc may heal on its own. Often times, our doctors will prescribe an MRI to better visualize the extent of the disc problem and direct the best course of care.
Conservative approaches to herniated disc treatment include:
- Ice therapy
- Chiropractic manipulation
- Spinal Decompression
- High-Intensity Laser Therapy
- Injury rehab, exercise, and gentle stretching to help relieve pressure on the nerve root
- Massage therapy
- Dry Needling
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and supplements such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or curcumin
- Oral steroids
- A combination of these options
If conservative treatment methods fail to relieve your pain, we will refer you to a neurosurgeon we trust to discuss surgical options.
