Neurokinetic Technique
Neurokinetic therapy (NKT) is an advanced therapeutic system that can help detect origins of poor movement and compensation patterns. NKT uses precise muscle tests that reveal faulty muscle and movement memories you have stored away in the Motor Control Center (MCC) of your brain.
It is based on the premise that when an injury occurs, certain muscles shut down or weaken, which forces other muscles to overcompensate and work much harder, causing pain and tightness. Once the MCC in your cerebellum recognizes the weakness in your muscles, it is open to new learning. In other words: NKT can reprogram your brain.
Here’s how the hands-on muscle testing and reprograming technique works: Your doctor applies light pressure while having you resist in order to evaluate the strength or weakness of a muscle. Once a deficiency is identified, your doctor will use a release technique to reestablish the correct firing pattern and activate inhibited muscles. This process leads to proper joint stabilization, decreased pain and increase performance.
As one of the many advanced, nonsurgical procedures available at Reagan Integrated Sports Medicine, Neurokinetic Therapy is used as both an assessment and rehab technique for:
- Chronic or unresolved pain
- Muscle strains
- Joint dysfunction
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Running injuries
- Tight muscles
- Post-surgical rehab
